Notes on Integers:
We are off to a good start. We have been working hard learning how to add, subtract, multipy, and divide with integers.
A hint for adding integers with different signs is to think of the positive number as what you have and the negative number as what you owe. We always pay our debts. If you paid the debt and have money left over then your answer is positive. If you still owe money then your answer is negative.
Subtraction problems must be changed to addition problems by the following method. The first number stays the same, the subtraction sign is changed to addition and the sign of the second number is changed to its opposite (positive to negative or negative to positive).
With multiplication and division, if two numbers have the same sign, then the answer is positive. If the two numbers have different signs, then the answer is negative.

Notes on Ratios and Proportions:
Ratios can be written in 3 ways: 1 to 2, 1/2 and 1:2
Remember to simplify if possible. Make sure you read the problems carefully and are writing the ratio in the correct order.
Proportions are made of two equivalent ratios. To see if two ratios are proportional you find a common denominator and if they turn out to be the same or if they can simplify to the same thing they are proportional. If you don't see a way to simplify or can't find a common denominator then cross multiply and if you get the same answer then they are proportional. If you are solving a porportion (finding the missing value), then you should look to see if one of the numbers will go into the other number either vertically or horizontally. If you can't find the missing number that way then you should divide to see what has been multiplied or divided by.
